“I read 1491. I read 1491 because it was recommended to me by my wife. It was actually an anniversary gift. The concept that we don't, in America, have a good notion of what life in pre-Columbus times was like. It's really about how Indians shaped both North and South America and how completely the continent was developing up until the time that Columbus first sailed. It definitely contained a lot of surprises and a lot of new information, at least for someone who has not studied pre-Columbian North and South America.
I really enjoyed the book, and I cannot think of anything that really stood out to me that I didn't like, because it was written in a very engaging way. Sometimes history can be boring, and so it was written, in a sense, just for a lay reader like me. And it was very much a book of presenting both sides to arguments, like in just about any scholarly community, there are going to be two sides to every story. I recommend, geez, every high school student should read 1491. I think it should replace some of the textbook material that exists out there. I would give 1491 five stars. I think it did an outstanding job of presenting history.”
